Call points for uni

by Mark Rowe

Dundee University is installing emergency call point pedestals around its campus for response to emergencies and incidents. The bespoke designed pedestals have been made specifically for Dundee by Aiphone. They incorporate Aiphone IX IP intercom stations which enable students and staff to communicate with security staff in the university’s control room.

The IX intercom features PoE (Power over Ethernet) which minimised installation time and costs, as there is no need to provide separate power supplies for each pedestal. Scottish Communications, the Perth-based installers who were awarded the contract to fit the emergency call points, were instead able to commission the intercom stations by connecting them to the uni’s network infrastructure. Each of the 1600mm x 200mm x 200mm custom built pedestals include a flush mounted IX intercom station with a large red call button. This has two outputs to trigger an emergency call and to switch an external video surveillance camera.

A first phase of the project will see five emergency call point pedestals deployed at selected central and remote campus locations, while the university evaluates the benefits of the emergency call points at other locations, such as car parks.

Stuart Leslie, Scottish Communication’s Group’s System Design Manager, said: “We have worked with the University of Dundee for a number of years on various security and communication projects. We were delighted to continue this relationship and introduce Aiphone as a trusted manufacturer, partnering us on delivering this exciting project. By integrating a one-touch emergency help button into our existing CCTV system, we are providing the students an incredibly comprehensive safety experience.”

The IX intercom can provide communication with an infinite number of intercom stations and is also able to interact with other IP devices and security systems. It offers the option of video entry security, internal communication, emergency stations and multicast paging. All of these can run between remote locations over large areas and distances, making the IX system the makers claim a solution for campuses, as well as other multiple locations such as airports, railway stations and parking facilities.

Wyatt Taylor, Sales Manager of Aiphone UK Ltd, said: “Creating a safe and secure environment for students and staff is of paramount importance and the Aiphone design and engineering team is very pleased to have been able to play a role in helping the University achieve this. We have welcomed the opportunity to work in partnership with Scottish Communications to deliver this custom built emergency call point solution. It is an excellent example of how Aiphone has the flexibility and resources to meet the needs of individual clients.”
