Brunel ID upgrade

by Mark Rowe

Each year Brunel University London, pictured, issues around 20,000 student identity cards holding details of access rights to over 700 doors. Grosvenor Technology’s JANUS access control system helped manage this process. Over time, the system’s ability to interface with other databases had allowed it to grow and become a cornerstone of the university’s campus information systems. To take this integration further, the university upgraded to the browser-based SATEON access system. That uses all existing JANUS hardware, and its Microsoft SQL back-end also offers two-way communication with third party databases. This has allowed the Uxbridge, west London-based university to automate several previously time-consuming processes such as transferring student pictures from the main record management system into the access rights database.

John O’Keeffe, Assistant Director of Maintenance at the University said: “The enhanced reporting and automation that SATEON offers have been a clear benefit for us. Our three-day intense student registration event progressed very smoothly, and we were able to deploy a custom report to track when ID cards were issued. This has allowed us to identify periods of peak demand so that staff levels can be adjusted accordingly at the next event. We are also in the process of customising the system to help streamline a number of other business processes. For example, at the end of a course a group of science students may no longer require access to certain laboratory facilities. SATEON now immediately detects the change in their course code and disables their access to this area.

“Grosvenor Technology’s staff have been extremely helpful throughout the transition, working late into the night and at weekends to answer our queries and perform remote fixes where required.”

According to its developers, SATEON provides an intuitive interface which can be accessed from any browser via a secure portal. This eliminates the time-consuming process of installing software on each PC or Mac, so that department staff can be granted access to the system at the click of a mouse. For existing JANUS customers, the company adds, the process of upgrading is quicker thanks to the new JANUS to SATEON Migration Tool.
