Production line scanner

by Mark Rowe

Ingenia Technology, an anti-counterfeiting product company, has launched the first product in its K-series of laser scanners to help manufacturers combat counterfeiting and diversion practices. Designed to be integrated into production lines, the new scanner is capable of scanning at 10m/s or up to 50 items a second – about 20pc faster than any competing anti-counterfeiting scanner it is claimed, on the market. The data captured and processed every second by the highly sensitive laser scanner is said to be equivalent to playing 140 CDs at once.

The new K-series scanner represents the next generation implementation of Ingenia’s novel Laser Surface Authentication (LSA™) technology. LSA™ uses a laser to scan the surface of products to generate an intrinsic ‘fingerprint’ of each item. Using a secure database and field scanners, each individual product or document can be authenticated anywhere and traced through the supply chain.

Developed with Cambridge Consultants, the product development company, Ingenia claims the scanner greatly increases the areas of use for its LSA technology. Enhanced opto-electronics enable it to scan almost any material, including shiny, very smooth or very dark surfaces. This enhanced operating capability of Ingenia’s LSA solution allows virtually all surfaces to be scanned and identified.

Ingenia’s LSA technology has already been deployed by manufacturers working in a variety of markets – from luxury goods and cosmetics, to high value products, secure documents and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).

Freddie Jones, Managing Director of Ingenia Technology, said: “Counterfeiting has become a highly sophisticated and lucrative global operation and is a threat to many industries. In order to bring the benefits of LSA to as many markets as possible we continue to invest in our innovative anti-counterfeiting technology. Building on our existing IP our first K-series scanner is a totally robust and flexible production line scanner that we believe delivers truly world-beating performance. However, this is just the first phase of our next-generation products, with a new range of field scanners in the pipeline for launch later this year and further product enhancements for LSA solutions and random number generation already in development.”

LSA analyses the naturally occurring microscopic surface imperfections that the material manufacturer itself cannot control or reproduce, making the system extremely secure. It also means that LSA cannot be overcome or assimilated by counterfeiters, unlike it is claimed the majority of overt and covert anti-counterfeit technologies that rely on adding a variety of physical features to documents or products.

Martin Cooper, project manager at Cambridge Consultants said: “Ingenia now has the tool to utilise its anti-counterfeiting technology in even more demanding situations. We see this breakthrough in high-performance authentication technology as being highly significant for brand owners and packaging companies in their supply chains, as well as government departments and agents who are on the front line of tackling counterfeit products.”
