OSPAs Summit

by Mark Rowe

The third OSPAs Thought Leadership Summit, organised with the NSI (National Security Inspectorate), runs on Wednesday, February 26 at the Royal Lancaster London. Event organisers have given more details of the line-up of speakers.

Stuart Wright, Chair of the UK Living Wage Advisory Council will address ‘Why pay a Real Living Wage and the benefits and implications for the security sector’. Stuart will provide a background to the Real Living Wage, the impact it has on people and services and why paying it could be right for your company, people and society. His talk will also cover hours worked, notice of shifts, sickness, staff turnover, productivity and morale – whilst exploring could the security sector do more and gain more from the Real Living Wage?

The Approved Contractor Scheme by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) the UK regulator has hundreds of ACS companies. An emerging concern is how some labour providers operate outside the remit of the ACS: engaging people on illegally low pay, who may not be adequately screened, and who may well be poorly trained in the task, which may even bring elements of rogue labour – and a threat to site and asset security.

Ian Todd, pictured, Chief Executive of the SIA, will cover ‘The role of the regulator in promoting best employment practice’ and will explore how can this threat be managed; and what is the role of the regulator?

Director and Founder of the OSPAs, Prof Martin Gill said: “The security sector is sometimes viewed as its own worst enemy. New developments, including technologies, offer enormous scope for improvement, yet these are often shunned as standards and practices are too slow to catch-up, and because some stakeholders lack vision or protect partisan interests at the expense of public good.

He added that the event will tackle these issues, “engaging with controversy, providing a platform for thinking differently; examining what should the collective industry response be, whether the regulators could/should do more and the appropriateness of those responses.”

Other speakers will be added to the programme in due course.

Doors to the Thought Leadership Summit will open at 11:15am; lunch will be provided, and an exhibition of products and services will be on display. The event will finish at 5pm, and the OSPAs Awards dinner will follow at 6:45pm.

Places at the event are limited. Book a delegate place for £45 plus VAT including lunch, entrance to the exhibition and afternoon refreshments at: https://uk.theospas.com/summit2020/.
