IISP LIVE 2019

by Mark Rowe

IISP LIVE 2019, a one-day conference for and about information security in Birmingham on Thursday, July 11, is the first big event by the Institute of Information Security Professionals since the Queen granted it a Royal Charter of Incorporation at a Privy Council meeting in December 2018.

That’s a step on the road to the IISP becoming a Chartered Institute, meaning that info-security can take on the trappings and legal authority of a chartered profession, like architects, surveyors and engineers. Dr Alastair MacWillson, Chair of the IISP, as a closing speaker will describe where the IISP goes next towards professionalising the sector.

IISP LIVE runs at Birmingham City University’s Millennium Point base in downtown Birmingham. There’ll be two sets of speakers; a ‘Masterclass’ and a main room. Speakers include Sir Rob Wainwright, the British former (until Brexit came along) head of Europol, the policing agency of the European Union; he’s now a partner at the audit firm Deloitte.

Speakers come from various sectors, and on the practitioner side include Sharon Barber – Chief Security Officer, Lloyds Banking Group; Adrian Winckles – Director of Cyber Security, Anglia Ruskin University; and David Aubrey-Jones – Information Security Manager, RBS. Ellie Hurst and Mike Gillespie of the information security awareness training and consultancy company Advent IM will discuss how infosec people can influence non-security people and get cyber things done. Likewise the day will cover internal info-security sector matters, such as apprenticeships, and how to do infosec, such as threat intelligence and risk assessment.

As an aside, you can lose yourself in the 20 minute interactive session hosted by Deloitte; a ‘cyber escape room’.

Dr MacWillson says: “Charters are granted rarely these days, and a body applying for a Charter would normally be expected to demonstrably meet several criteria, regarding its reputation, its standing and its contribution to the profession. I am delighted to say that we meet those criteria, which I think reflects how strong and respected our membership is in the professional community and the influence we bring to bear in shaping the information security profession.”
