Bike work praised

by msecadm4921

The OCS security staff at Bristol’s Cabot Circus shopping centre has been praised by police for their part in catching numerous prolific bike thieves in the area. More than 40 OCS security staff have worked with the Avon and Somerset Police to ensure that 11 bike thieves have been charged in the last three months.

Bike theft has fallen by 8 per cent and crime levels overall have fallen in the last year in the area as a result of the team’s efforts to monitor bikes on the premises and surrounds in real time via a control centre. The team speaks with patrolling officers who are then able to apprehend thieves. In a previous operation, footage supplied to the police by OCS security staff resulted in one offender receiving a court referral order and the other a conditional discharge.

Neighbourhood sergeant Matt Parfitt said: “Our specialist city centre cycle theft team works hard to tackle this problem proactively and the partnership with the Cabot Security team has been very successful.”

The security team was also shortlisted for a Sceptre Award, a shopping centre industry award, for Security Team of the Year 2012. The winner was announced at the ceremony at the Dorchester, London on June 19. Although One Stop shopping centre went home with the award, the OCS team was commended in the nomination for their work during the 2011 riots when 200 youths descended upon Cabot Circus. They were also commended for leading community security meetings, attended each month by about 60 locals.

Justin Patel, Senior Service Support Manager at Cabot Circus said: “The security team at Cabot Circus has consistently demonstrated a level of professionalism and commitment to all aspects of their roles which exceeds expectations and goes above and beyond the call of duty. This has been recognised through the partnership with the police and through the nomination for the Sceptre Award.”
