York Barbican turnkey system

by Mark Rowe

The re-launched York Barbican has a safety and security system by Rotherham-based Reflex Systems.

The indoor sport and concert venue’s managers (SMG UK) sought to manage public areas, while having auditable access control, in time for the re-launch.

Reflex says it put together a ‘turnkey’ solution, including a custom designed package of site-wide technologies. This system allows SMG to manage not just the day to day operational processes generally, but also control and monitoring for all public areas, ensuring the safety and security of the building, but more importantly its staff and visitors too.

As well as being a premier entertainment venue, The Barbican is a much loved landmark building and the largest conference venue in the city, so a more than average technology solution was seen as essential by owners and operators alike, making Reflex a natural choice for the contract.

“We [SMG] needed more than an ordinary security and site safety system for what is one of the busiest and most prestigious venues in the country,” said Steve Ford, Operations Manager for Barbican York. “Reflex took the time to understand our needs; we have been impressed with their expertise, experience and ability to manage and drive the relationship. We have been pleased with their service and professionalism throughout.”

Reflex’s role is delivering solutions unobtrusively and without getting in the way of the client’s business, which is why their discreet involvement in this prestigious project is only now being revealed.

“Entertainment and conferencing facilities of this size and profile need a very different approach to the ones we adopt for some of our other clients,” said John Pye, Group Managing Director of Reflex. “Technologies for the Barbican needed to be highly effective, yet unobtrusive. The plan was to seamlessly fit in with the daily operational processes of the building without getting in the way of employees and visitors going about their legitimate business.”

The Barbican now enjoys the very latest in site systems, which have brought the venue up to the desired modern standards and in keeping with its multi-million pond facelift.

Established in 1987, Reflex was an early champion of both CCTV and Access control technologies and has since developed its portfolio to include intrusion detection and fire detection and is now one of the UK’s best known independent technology integrators – delivering some of the most leading edge solutions, both locally within the Yorkshire region and overseas, of which this latest project for the York Barbican is just one recent example.
