Uni upgrade

by Mark Rowe

ASSA ABLOY Access Control’s Aperio lock has been fitted by installers WOT Security at the University of Surrey. This upgrades the security to wireless access control.

The University of Surrey campus based in Guildford is home to 18,000 students and around 3000 staff. The university has worked with ASSA ABLOY for a number of years. Most recently, after a tender process WOT Security were selected to upgrade the access control, to the latest open platform ARX solution from ASSA ABLOY, opening up new opportunities for integrated security solutions to be installed across the campus.

Starting with the new Reception building at Manor Park, ASSA ABLOY Access Control worked with Walton-on-Thames-based WOT to fit 43 Aperio on line access control units and ARX controllers added to the new system.

Alan Donnachie, Deputy Director of Estates and Facilities at the University of Surrey, says: “We have developed a working partnership with ASSA ABLOY Access Control, who have provided a professional and competent level of service easily accessible to discuss and understand our needs for security, and delivered cost-effective, innovative solutions. We had no hesitation in turning to them and WOT Security for advice on upgrading to an access control solution, utilizing the ARX system. The installation of Aperio has proven hugely popular in the reception buildings and we are already extending their use to student accommodation and looking at ways to install the solution across the main University.”

As part of the University of Surrey’s a new build student accommodation, 260 units have been specified, again with WOT selected to complete the installations in ‘Block G’ which is expected to be complete in summer 2013. Andrew Bowes, director of WOT Security, says: “The great benefit of working with Aperio is its flexibility to adapt to any situation and seamlessly integrate into the ARX system and other systems, to enable a wire-free deployment, without any need to modify the doors. This was proven at Manor Park to not only upgrade the controllability and security of the premises but also bring all the benefits of access control, which will in time be extended to all those who visit, attend and work at the University of Surrey.”

The Aperio wireless lock allows free egress via the lock handle when required and the use of card credentials on additional online doors. This provides real time audits and instant updates of access restrictions through the existing access control system.

Tabitha Morton, Sales Director at ASSA ABLOY Access Control added: ‘Aperio is increasingly being specified at Universities across the UK, as it offers an innovative solution with the capability to secure, monitor and record required activity, using just one cost effective system, that instantly integrates with existing access control units such as ARX. This is great news for financially and resource strained maintenance and facilities teams who in the current climate are pressured to balance cost savings but have a duty of care to all those who attend or work in a university. As the University of Surrey demonstrates, Aperio can be easily specified on a scaleable basis to work with budgets, and yet still always result in a high quality, stylish security solution.”
