UK data centres

by Mark Rowe

The IT firm Microsoft is hailing how it’s offering to customers private internet connections with the company’s UK data centres.

Microsoft says that its customers include the Ministry of Defence, the Met Police and parts of the NHS. According to the IT firm, a new connectivity feature allows customers who would like a hybrid option – storing some information online and some on their premises – to manage their data.

Microsoft also reprots a second ExpressRoute location in the UK – in Newport, south Wales. This location allows Azure customers to have what the IT company calls path diversity for ‘High Availability and Disaster Recovery’.

Liam Maxwell, the Government’s National Technology Adviser, said: “The arrival of local data centres in the UK is fantastic news for British businesses and the public sector alike.

“Cloud services enable organisations to change how they deliver existing services and to design new services for their customers, reshaping how they engage employees and reduce operational costs.”

Online storage

Microsoft says it has one the world’s largest online storage infrastructures, supported by more than 100 data centres globally. These hold over 30 trillion pieces of data. Cindy Rose, Microsoft’s UK chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to see such growing demand for our cloud services from our new data centres in the UK. We’ve been part of the UK’s tech landscape for over 30 years and we’re proud of the way this country leads the world in embracing technology and new ideas.

“With our trusted cloud now delivered locally, and our commitment to principles of security, privacy, transparency, compliance, and availability, we are well placed to support the digital transformation of organisations throughout the country.”
