Somerset House extension

by Mark Rowe

The manned guarding and security service company First Security, part of FM firm Interserve, has been awarded a contract extension with Somerset House, the arts and cultural centre beside the Thames in London. The contract, which has been in place since 1999, has been extended until 2015.

The two-year extension – which is valued at about £1m – will see First Security continue to deliver manned guarding at Somerset House, which is home to the Coulthard Institute of Art, 24-hours a day, 365 days. Services include cover for control rooms on both sides of the location, patrolling, goods received, and customer-facing officers to assist visitors to the site. New to the contract is the delivery of manned guarding and a receptionist service for a recently refurbished wing of the building.

Tony Byrne, managing director at First Security says; “First Security is delighted to extend their contract with Somerset House, one of London’s premier visitor attractions. The services we provide in protecting visitors, staff and property in such a diverse and busy location enables First Security to demonstrate their flexibility and customer service to all parties.”

Mark Hone, facilities manager at The Courtauld Institute of Art says; “First Security are experts in their field and our requirement for both manned guarding and management of the wider site security has been delivered consistently over the years. In addition, First Security is able to offer support and guidance on a variety of security related matters. The protection of people and property is our priority, and the relationship with First Security is very much a partnership. We have confidence in First Security, and ultimately we trust them.”

The security contractor also provides event officers for internal and external events at Somerset House ranging from private weddings to premier parties, including providing security officers at London Fashion Week.

Angela Sayers, operations manager at First Security, says: “Somerset House was impressed with First Security’s performance at the Jewellery Week and Goldsmiths’ design exhibitions in June this year, which has given them confidence in us to deliver additional premier events. This contract extension is an excellent example of how First Security continues to deliver high standards of security solutions and support our client.”
