Silent campaign

by msecadm4921

At Bournemouth University, a SSHH (Stay Silent, Head Home) campaign highlights the issue of late night noise made by students and how taxis taking them to and from the town centre can also disturb local residents.

SUBU (the uni’s students union) confirmed that as part of this campaign, United Taxis – one of the largest providers of taxis for students – agreed to sign a pledge stating their commitment to reducing noise at night. This will include a vow to park responsibly, not to beep their horns after 8pm and to turn their engines off whilst waiting for students to get in and out of their vehicles.

United Taxis signed this pledge in March. There was also a community litter pick afterwards through roads where many students live, starting at the top of Frederica Road and moving through Stanfield Road, Sedgely Road and Firs Glen Road. The Bournemouth Echo reported on the event and Winton East Councillor Theo Stratton told them: “This proves that students are helping out with the community and that quite a lot of students are willing to do their bit.”

Jan Read, of Stanfield Road Homewatch added: “I think it’s fantastic. It’s taken a long time to get to this stage but all the letters, meetings and hard work were worthwhile. I think we’re winning.”
