Secured by Design cases

A new hotel at Exeter Airport has gained Secured by Design accreditation.

Architectural Liaison Officers (ALOs) from Devon and Cornwall Police worked with hotel developers to crime prevention measures including lighting, CCTV and installation of specialist doors and windows.

Other factors have included maximising the security of the car parking area and the cycle hoops. Simon Fordham, general manager, Hampton by Hilton said: “When our guests stay here we want them to be in a safe and secure building. Knowing that this hotel has been accredited with the Secured by Design award will reassure them that both they and their personal belongings are well protected.”

The Secured by Design Award was presented to the Hampton by Hilton hotel for its commitment to design out crime within the hotel. As well as the general layout being assessed by police, windows and doors have met specifications and CCTV has been installed.

Supt Chris Eastwood who heads policing across Exeter, East and Mid Devon said: “We welcome the opportunity to work with architects and developers to ensure that security has been taken into account at the very earliest stage in the planning process. It is encouraging that a large hotel chain such as Hilton can see the benefits of considering crime prevention during the design of their building.”

Awarding a Secured by Design award to a large commercial enterprise is a first for the Devon and Cornwall area. The 120-bedroom hotel opened for business in April 2013. Work on the new building began November 2010. Supt Eastwood officially presented the award to Simon Fordham, General Manager of the Hampton by Hilton on Friday, June 14.

Meanwhile a £9.6m 81-home affordable housing scheme in Edinburgh was designed to prevent crime. Home Scotland’s Kirkliston Village development has now been granted “Secured By Design” status – a police initiative aimed at reducing crime through the intelligent and creative use of design.

The development has been designed to ensure that paths and roads are well lit and open, eliminating blind spots. Open space has been designed to be overlooked, robust gates installed to rear gardens and doors and windows meet security standards.

The homes, which include terraced houses and flats, will be available for affordable and social housing. Built by Barratt Homes East Scotland, the scheme received £2,920,000 in grant funding from City of Edinburgh Council. The Secured By Design certificate was presented to Stuart Dixon, Home Scotland’s head of development, by Inspector John Cooper of Police Scotland (both pictured).

Insp Cooper said: “Police Scotland is committed to keeping people safe and officers regularly engage with their local communities to offer advice on crime prevention, including appropriate security measures to consider. The Secured By Design award recognises the diligent work undertaken by companies to implement crime prevention ideals during the planning, design and construction of residential and commercial properties.

“The award recipients’ approach to security is of vital assistance to police; ensuring properties are not an easy target for criminals and it is only right that they are acknowledged for these efforts.”

Mr Dixon said: “Home Scotland’s main purpose is to provide affordable homes for those who need them but we don’t just want to build new homes. We also want to build thriving communities where people feel part of a neighbourhood. A major factor in feeling happy where you live and being part of a community is to know that your home and neighbourhood is safe. That’s why everyone at Home Scotland is delighted that Phase 1 of Kirkliston Village has achieved Secured By Design status.

“The windows, doors and other features used in this scheme meet modern anti intruder standards and the designs of the streets, including good quality lighting, reduce the opportunities for crime to occur.”
