Port’s drones issue

by Mark Rowe

Drones are a bugbear for many security managers with large sites to protect, such as ports.

A year ago, in our January 2016 print issue of Professional Security magazine, we featured Martin Clark, the head of security at Associated British Ports (ABP), who described at the Transec (Transport Security Expo) exhibition in London how drones overflying were among the threats at the port of Southampton. A year on, the name of the show had changed to the UK Security Expo, and this time he spoke about the Humber ports – Hull, Grimsby and Immingham – but drones remain a problem for the former Humberside Police CTSA (Counter Terrorism Security Adviser). He began with background; the Humber ports have the largest tonnage in the UK, whether in terms of passengers, and bulk cargos such as timber, and coal; each bring their own challenges.

At the end of all tech …

He offered as his theme: “At the end of every piece of technology that we deploy, is a human being,” such as a security guard. “And I say that not to be critical of the guards, but to highlight the fact that we have people not always trained to use the technology that we have deployed; they don’t always understand the rationale.” Technology does have its place, in identifying who comes to the port, Martin went on.

For more, see the January 2017 print issue of Professional Security magazine. As a speaker at the previous year’s event, Martin Clark also featured in the January 2016 print issue of the magazine.
