Police Support Volunteers in Cambs

by Mark Rowe

Police Support Volunteers (PSV) are at work in Cambridgeshire. The volunteers have been using an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and CCTV van.

On March 25 the volunteers, with Special Constables and Officers from Sector Neighbourhood Teams were conducting an ANPR operation in the Peterborough area. Operation Peninsula will use the ANPR to tackle issues such as vehicles with no insurance or no tax.

PC Matthew Selves said: “The work the volunteers do is invaluable. They give up their free time to assist with preventing and detecting crime. If they are not actively searching out offences they are providing a reassuring presence to the communities of Cambridgeshire. So far they have mainly been used for neighbourhood issues. They could also be used at other events such as football matches or local festivals.”

Sir Graham Bright, Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Police Support Volunteers play a crucial role in the modern police force. The volunteers carry out a wide variety of roles and have a range of specialist skills that increases public trust and confidence in the service.

“They get a unique insight into the current challenges of delivering local policing and provide an independent voice on behalf of the communities we serve. Volunteering is an exceptionally rewarding activity giving people additional skills and one which I highly commend.”
