One Albert Quay

by Mark Rowe

In Cork, One Albert Quay in 2016 has become the new global headquarters for the product manufacturer Tyco. The multi-national will employ 500 people there, in sourcing, procurement, research, development, information technology, compliance, HR and finance. It’s a showcase building for the company, to show lighting, heating, power, access control, video, fire detection and fire suppression, all connected through the Tyco On platform.

Tyco Security Products in use there are CEM Systems’ AC2000 as the access control system, supported by emerald access terminals and sPass readers to control key doors, lifts and car parking access. American Dynamics’ victor product provides the video management of VideoEdge and Illustra cameras. victor allows access control alarms to be sent to the victor unified video solution, where they can be associated with video actions. Also the AC2000 victor interface allows control of AC2000 devices from within the victor unified client, and support for access features such as remote door lock and unlock.

emerald is described as an edge terminal; a reader and controller in one device that features a built-in VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) intercom, 4.3-inch LCD touch screen and door modes and remote applications that cover time and attendance, meeting room bookings (the booking application is integrated with Microsoft Outlook, for users to create and edit a bookings through their Outlook calendar, or at the door), advertising displays and personalised messages.

emerald TS300f is deployed at the research and development areas of the building as an extra layer of biometric security in these areas. The TS300f is a controller, IP card reader and biometric product, that offers three-stage identity authentication; card, PIN and the biometric fingerprint.

The ‘smart’ lifts are centrally controlled by the AC2000 and emerald terminals, and integrated with Schindler Lifts. When an employee or visitor swipes their access control card on the terminal; this buttonless lift system uses automatic location choice depending on the users’ access control privileges. The lift then automatically brings the card holder to the floor they are working. The ‘Cashless Restaurant’ is integrated with AC2000. This means that an employee’s AC2000 access card acts as their wallet, and that no cash is needed on site.

For the construction phase of One Albert Quay, the Entry Checklist feature on CEM’s emerald terminal provided onsite security and promoted Environmental Health and Safety policies. emerald Entry Checklist provides verification at an entry or exit point, by checking that card holders respond to a series of up to five questions before the door will open. At One Albert Quay, Entry Checklist was used to ensure that construction workers had permits and training before entering the site.
