NI checks

by Mark Rowe

Checks on security staff at the venue hosting the UK City of Culture events in Derry-Londonderry on Tuesday, March 19, found that all those inspected held valid Security Industry Authority licences.

SIA investigators carried out the operation to gather information about private security in the area and to test the compliance of security during the events. SIA investigators conducted checks on 25 security operatives, including door supervisors and CCTV operatives.

SIA Head of Investigation Sharon Roberts said: “To be awarded the UK City of Culture 2013 status is a prestigious accolade. We are pleased to see that the event promoter in this case has acknowledged this by ensuring all security operatives are correctly licensed.

“Northern Ireland is to host the G8 in June and the World Police and Fire Games in August, so 2013 will be remembered as an historic year. During these events, private security will play an important role in public protection so it is important that security operatives are properly trained and hold the relevant SIA licence.

“We are committed to working with Derry County Council and the PSNI [Police Service of Northern Ireland] to ensure public safety at the UK City of Culture events, allowing the people of Northern Ireland and the many visitors that it attracts to enjoy all that Northern Ireland has to offer.”

Chief Inspector Tony Callaghan from the PSNI’s Planning Team for the UK City of Culture said: “The PSNI in Derry-Londonderry have an excellent relationship with a number of those local firms providing private security services. We welcome the assistance of the SIA in ensuring that all local security firms are complying with relevant legislation. Regular checks by the SIA ensure that this important service is both legal, professional and assists with raising standards.”
