Moon launch control room

by Mark Rowe

In the United States, Pittsburgh-based aerospace robotics company Astrobotic is due later this year to launch Peregrine Mission One. That would make it the first commercial mission to land on another planetary body. To prepare for this historic launch, Astrobotic needed a control room.

Jennifer Lopez, Astrobotic’s Director of Business Development, Commercial and Civil Space said: “The Peregrine lander launch and Moon landing will be controlled directly from the newly built Astrobotic Mission Control Centre. “When looking to develop our new mission control centre, we wanted to prioritise operator experience.”

The control room furniture firm Winsted and Astrobotic set out to engineer their new control room with intelligent ergonomics and smart furniture. This Astrobotic Mission Control Centre needed to support the high stress, high stakes Peregrine lander launch. The team controlling and monitoring the critical launch is expecting long hours that will require extreme focus. Winsted’s ergonomic, modular, and adaptable Sightline Consoles have been fitted.

Astrobotic’s mission control centre has six Sightline consoles, each seating three operators. The Winsted Sightline offers adjustability with optimised viewing angles based on an operator’s needs.

Randy Smith, Winsted President said: “Together, Astrobotic and Winsted have built a control centre that optimises the space and offers ergonomic support to users. During the upcoming Peregrine lander launch, Astrobotic engineers and operators will benefit from the centre’s innovative design that offers both comfort and control. It’s a state-of-the-art innovative control room, built for their ground-breaking and historic launch to the moon.”
