Metal theft in PM town

by msecadm4921

The constituency of Prime Minister David Cameron has been metal theft. Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses after lead was stolen from the roofs of ten schools in the Witney area since late June.

The latest offence occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday, August 14 and 15, when a large quantity of lead was stolen from the West Witney Primary School at Deer Park in Edington Road. Police add that this follows a series of similar thefts from nine other schools and colleges in Witney:

2-3 August – Mulberry Bush School, Standlake

9-13 July – Springfield School, Witney

13-16 July – Our Lady of Lourdes School, Witney

19 July – West Oxfordshire College, Witney

24-31July – West Witney Primary School, Witney

18-25 July – Henry Box School, Witney

28-29 June – West Oxfordshire College, Witney

22-29 June – Henry Box School, Witney

DS Dick White from Witney Police Station said: “This is a heinous crime which will have a serious impact on the infrastructure of our schools here in Witney. Removing lead from roofs means that rain will get into the building causing serious damage inside. It will cost a lot to replace it all, in terms of money,  inconvenience and distruption. It is very unsettling for our community.

“I am appealing to anyone who may have seen activity particularly a vehicle which would have been used to carry the lead away from any one of these locations, to get in touch. I would ask the community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to us through our non-emergency number 101.”

Under Operation Tornado, police have been engaging with scrap metal dealers to gather intelligence on metal thefts.  Individuals will be required to provide proof of their identity including their address when trying to sell scrap metals to dealers agreeing to take part.
