Light for solar powered system

by Mark Rowe

VARIO LED illuminators from the UK security lighting product company Raytec have been selected as part of a bespoke, mobile and solar powered video surveillance system, as deployed in Germany.

The security installer G&G Sicherheitstechnik GmbH had seen demand for a mobile surveillance product to identify subjects at night, from sites without mains power: such as large building sites, highway and bridge construction, event security, outdoor and open space monitoring.

As video and alarm system designers, G&G set about creating a solution. Quality lighting was seen as crucial, not only so that the cameras could see at night, but so that the video analytics for the alarm triggers could work. With the need for a mobile structure, the lights needed to be compact and lightweight but able to cover the site.

Bernd Gerhards Managing Director of G&G, says: “Following extensive testing we chose VARIO illuminators from Raytec as the best performing lighting to work seamlessly with the other system components, coupled with the fact that they had the lowest energy consumption and gave 100 per cent reliability even under the worst weather conditions.”

Each system includes three panels of VARIO i4 120 degree low voltage Infra-Red illuminators integrated onto a mobile pole structure, with three dome cameras, a PTZ camera, and a photovoltaic panel to power the system, independent from a power grid.

Bernd Gerhards adds: “The wide angle IR illuminators that we selected easily covered 360 degrees at a distance of 120m, meaning that we could comfortably illuminate the whole site from one mobile structure!”

The IR lighting allows the cameras to generate night time images, “…but the system really becomes intelligent when the lighting is used with the video analytics!” adds Bernd. The even spread of lighting allows the analytics software to identify subjects on scene and trigger alarms which alert a control centre that the system is linked to 24/7, or the local police. The illumination also reduces the number of false alarms, the firms add. Visit www.rayteccctv.com.
