IP upgrade

by Mark Rowe

Middlesbrough Council has opted for an upgrade to enable its CCTV network to migrate to IP.

After an initial consultation, the council has installed a number of network video recorders and upgraded the integrated software in control rooms, to add to its 170 cameras. The local Teeside installer was Vizsec and product suppliers Pelco by Schneider Electric and icomply. Vizsec specified a Digital Sentry network video recorder and DX video recorders from Pelco, to store images from a large area of Middlesbrough.

icomply supplied its integration software for the council to monitor and manage any combination of analogue and IP devices through a single common operational platform. Kevin Smith, Director, Pelco by Schneider Electric said: “In this instance, Middlesbrough Council was looking to manage several IP and analogue cameras as part of an upgrade to its security infrastructure. By using Pelco’s Digital Sentry NVR they have the advantage of intuitive operation and open architecture, while overall they have benefitted from a cost effective method of migrating to IP, at a comfortable pace. Meanwhile, icomply’s open platform integration software has allowed Middlesbrough Council to operate a combination of analogue and IP cameras and encoders through a single interface.”

icomply provided its VTAS software, for IP and analogue security products, to add to the scope of the control room. The software enables integration between CCTV, access control, fire system, fence management, traffic management and more. icomply installed a centralised server with three operational VTAS clients, to control the Pelco system and other elements. This was then linked into four icomply wonderwall controllers.

Michael Gallagher, Business Development Director from icomply said: “The new system open platform configuration allows the control room to move forward from its current operation of public space monitoring to enabling a wider connectivity and monitoring of remote buildings and systems not just for CCTV purposes but monitoring of IDS, fire and other similar building management applications.  The icomply software was selected as we are vendor neutral, meaning that it can integrate into most systems regardless of manufacturer.”

Middlesbrough now has an automated incident management and reporting system, linking all of the IP and analogue cameras, VMS and DVR equipment. Councillor Charlie Rooney, Middlesbrough Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said: “People are more aware than ever of the capabilities and potential of digital cameras, so it’s essential that we make the best possible use of the latest technology. This upgrade gives Middlesbrough a truly state-of-the art CCTV system by combining digital recorders with the latest software which gives us greater capacity and allows for improved picture quality.

“These improvements put the Middlesbrough Council CCTV Centre firmly at the forefront of this new era, ensuring the best possible public space CCTV safety and security service for those who live, visit or work in the town.”
