IP door entry for apartment

by Mark Rowe

IP networked, multi-building door entry has been installed at Queensmead, a apartment development in St John’s Wood, London NW8. Interphone was awarded the refurbishment project to replace an ageing, legacy door entry system that had become obsolete and was beginning to fail across the six block, 193 unit site.

The company fitted what it calls a complete, end-to-end solution including all new cabling, monitors, handsets, control equipment and panels, using the Comelit VIP door entry product and Comelit Simplekey access control.

The full IP networked system needed the replacement of all cabling from the panel to each of the apartments, using existing routes, ducts and containment wherever possible to minimise damage to interiors and the décor. The installer adds that it also worked with onsite management throughout, to minimise any disruption to residents during the work.

That IP connectivity across the apartments gives residents fob-activated entry along with hands-free monitors in each unit. That provides access to visitors and an internal communications tool with other residents or onsite porters. It also possesses a call log server facility, for the recording, storage and playback of calls from the entrance panels.

The IP networking solution was selected due to the longer term benefits, in particular responsive maintenance with remote access and diagnostics to resolve problems on the system and reduce operational overheads. The managing agent can also upscale and expand the system, including the potential for an upgrade to CCTV cameras.

James Hewitt-Lee, Senior Property Manager at the London estate agent Kinleigh Folkard & Hayward said: “We needed an effective way of achieving building security, while enabling a simple way of admitting known and trusted visitors. By taking advantage of an advanced IP networked system means we have implemented a solution that will meet our needs now and in the future. Working closely with Interphone, we have been able to take advantage of their unrivalled experience, including its excellent project management, installation and support expertise. This has ensured that the project was completed to a high standard on budget and on time.”

Julian Synett, Managing Director of Interphone said: “Many residential developments are increasingly having to make do with technology systems that are no longer fit for purpose. We are working with a growing number of organisations within the marketplace that are looking for advanced security solutions that are cost-effective and can be installed without causing widespread damage to the buildings. Using our unrivalled expertise, we are able to design and deploy these systems to the highest standard, minimising disruption and working within strict budgets.”
