IP at data centre

by Mark Rowe

Security Systems Technology Ltd (SST), have been awarded a multi-million-pound contract to design, build and commission a physical and logical IP security platform at ‘Central Exchange’, a new 110,000 sq ft data centre in Birmingham.

The client, Data City Exchange (dce), sought perimeter security, high-definition IP surveillance and biometric access control. dce design, build and supply data centre space to the corporate, government and carrier markets.

SST specified proven and emerging technologies (after field testing) as well as developing bespoke integrations. IP is being used throughout to ensure future-proofing and a Physical Security Information Management (PSIM) software platform will provide an intuitive front end for security staff.

This software-based integration platform connects and manages disparate building and security technologies. Aggregating intelligence from these systems, it will allow dce operators to react to incidents through real-time situational awareness and a Common Operating Picture (COP). dce customers will be able to integrate with their own in-house security systems for remote asset monitoring.

SST reports that during product research and field testing many systems didn’t make the grade and alternatives had to be sourced and tested.

SST designed and built a multi-layered defence security platform including PSIM, a multi-zone fence-mounted perimeter intrusion detection system (PIDS), crash-tested trackless speed gates, ANPR, vehicle air locks and even a personnel ‘man-trap’ using volumetric detection. The site has over 150 5-megapixel IP CCTV cameras, military-grade thermal imaging CCTV cameras as well as target-tracking PTZ domes and intelligent video analytics. Access control provision includes iris recognition, multi-spectral fingerprint recognition, digital audio two-way intercom and Tannoy.

Chetan Vasudev, Managing Director of SST, said: “With over 28 best-of-breed supply chain partners and under the guidance of third-party advisers and Government bodies such as the CPNI, we were able to offer a unique security package that could effectively deal with the security, operational and corporate governance requirements on a project of this class and size. With their Evo-POD data centre solutions, dce are providing enterprise class cloud services and SST has matched the calibre of their offering with an exceptional physical security platform.”

John Eland, Chief Executive of dce, said: “SST’s understanding of our complex requirements and the flexibility of their response were critical factors in our decision. We are creating cutting-edge data centre facilities and our ‘”Evo-SEC” security platform has to be industry-leading.”
