Integration for care home

by Mark Rowe

The installer WLS (West London Security) has integrated security and satellite TV systems at a care home redevelopment, as delivered by main contractor McLaughlin & Harvey for the charity Jewish Care. The first phase of the development project, the building of a new 64 bed care home and adjacent assisted living studios, is under way and will open its doors in early 2019 at Princess Alexandra Care Home in Stanmore, north London. After this first phase when residents from the current home have moved into their new home, the second phase, building of independent living and communal facilities, will begin. The whole site will be complete by autumn 2020.

WLS will install CCTV and access control systems at the Princess Alexandra, integrating to provide control and monitoring from the reception area. The company will also install satellite TV with a port in every en-suite bedroom, enabling residents to watch Israeli and Turkish TV.

Managing Director of WLS, Jeremy Ewen says: “The CCTV installation has been designed to offer the highest levels of security without feeling intrusive. HD quality CCTV cameras with motion senor-based recording and automated analytics will monitor the entrances to the new building and the perimeter.

“The CCTV will also control the ANPR automated barriers and staff at the care home will be able to programme the number plates of authorised personnel and visitors into the system using a web browser, ensuring the site remains both secure and welcoming.”

All locking mechanisms for the access control are Part M approved for use in a healthcare setting and push-bar sounders will be fitted in the extra care section of the building to prevent vulnerable residents from wandering. WLS will also install door entry, with video-enabled handsets at nurses’ stations and the main reception.

Jeremy adds: “We are very experienced in the health and residential care sectors and understand the need to ensure security systems are robust without compromising the homely, welcoming character of the setting. We’re delighted to be part of Jewish Care’s exciting plans to transform the Princess Alexandra Care Home into Sandringham – a new hub providing a wide range of facilities for the local community.”

David Ross from Harvey Group says: “Providing a high standard of security and safety for residents is critical, in a care home setting both to support physical wellbeing and to provide complete peace of mind. That’s why we’ve brought WLS in as trusted experts to advise on specification, and install, integrate and commission the systems.”
