Home safety call

by Mark Rowe

Residents are being urged by a security installer to take steps to keep their homes safe this summer. North East-based Hadrian Technology urge families gearing up for the holiday period to think about how they secure their property.

Gary Trotter, pictured, general manager at Hadrian Technology said: “With the onset of warmer weather and lighter nights, there is usually a rise in offences where intruders sneak through open windows and doors which present an open invitation to thieves. Countless homeowners will be taking advantage of a warm British summer and many will also jet off to hotter climates to enjoy a summer holiday abroad. This means homes will be unoccupied for significantly long periods of time, so it’s wise to ensure the correct security measures are taken.

“It can only take a second for a thief to come through an open window or door, and it’s all the more attractive to them if valuable items that are easy to take are on show such as a laptop, jewellery or keys left on a bench or window sill.”

In light of research which revealed four in ten Britons log on to Facebook and Twitter at least once a day abroad, and that three in ten people say they would deliberately write a boastful holiday status to make people at home envious, Gary is also advising property owners to be careful what they post on social media sites when travelling abroad.

Gary said: “People often forget that just about anyone can view images, status updates and tweets online. I always worry when I see people publicising that they’re going on holiday. Is it really wise to announce when you’re leaving your house unoccupied to users of a global network? All it takes is one online view from a thief, or a tip off from an accomplice. If you’re checking-in to tell your online followers where you are, then you are practically inviting them into your home.”

Gary advises homeowners to take plenty of home security precautions, particularly if you’ll be spending time away from home this summer.

“Simple steps like locking doors, even when in another part of the house or garden, and investing in a timer switch for later in the night when it gets dark can make a big difference. Security lights and an alarm also deter thieves, and CCTV systems can help home owners relax completely whilst they are away.”

Hadrian Technology offers CCTV for commercial and domestic properties. The company provides HD-SDI systems which use Videcon’s Concept Pro camera range, which can be linked to mobile devices or home computers using their V-HDR app. The monitoring can be set up to list any ‘events’ such as disturbances or break-ins, by date and time, which can be accessed through the app, and provide alerts via email, if there is movement in a particular area of a building or grounds. The viewer can then instantly view footage – live or recorded – to check to see if there is a problem or a false alarm.

Gary added: “Our DIY CCTV kit is ideal for homes as it’s a good value kit that the customer can fit it themselves. It’s quick and easy to install. The customer can then call on our expert team who will visit their home free of charge if required, to link their system up to any remote monitoring device they want to use with the CCTV.”

The DIY CCTV kit comes with four colour eye ball style cameras suitable for indoor and outdoor use, built-in infrared, four 20 metre cables, a power supply, and a four channel digital recorder. The system comes with a 500 GB hard drive, which will collect a month’s worth of footage on each camera. Visit http://hadriantechnology.co.uk
