Highway protection

by Mark Rowe

The UK building materials firm Lafarge Tarmac sought lone worker protection products for the safety and protection of highway staff.

In spring 2013, Reliance Protect provided GPS-enabled Identicom lone worker devices in the armband of high visibility jackets. The product is accredited to BS8484 standards, comes with man-down motion detection, and locates workers in the event of an emergency. The solution combines 24/7/365 manned monitoring from the Reliance Monitoring Centre, a helpdesk, face-to-face training for Lafarge Tarmac users and management support and reporting tools for a fixed monthly fee.

Lafarge Tarmac has eliminated an “accompanied worker scheme,” which previously required operatives to work in pairs. Staff now drive vehicles and do tasks alone carrying the device. Dan Thomas, Sales and Marketing Director of Reliance High-Tech, said, “Reliance Protect is the largest lone worker protection solution in the UK, protecting over 50,000 lone workers in an array of job functions and industries.” And Paul Fleetham, Managing Director for Lafarge Tarmac Contracting, added: “By equipping our lone workers with this innovative device, we can access real-time information from site, helping us to further improve the safety of our employees. This technology sets a new benchmark for lone worker safety and through a central control centre ensures that we are in constant communication with our employees and can immediately deploy support if necessary.”
