Get ready for winter

by Mark Rowe

Whether you are travelling or at work or at home, be ready for winter, the Met Office urges. Visit the Met Office website.

Check that you have an emergency kit available in your car. This should include:

Ice scraper and de-icer
Warm clothes and blankets – for you and all passengers
Torch and spare batteries – or a wind-up torch
Food and a flask with a hot drink
Any medication you need to take regularly
Boots
First aid kit
Jump leads
A shovel
Road atlas
Sunglasses (the glare from winter sun can be dazzling).

Check that you know where to find traffic and travel information. Live updates are provided by the Highways Agency for motorways and trunk roads in England, or Transport Direct for public transport as well as car journeys. For more advice before you travel in winter click here.

Learn a few simple first aid steps; such as how to deal with strains and sprains or broken bones, as trips and falls can increase in icy weather. There are a number of accredited first aid providers and useful education resources available.
