Free event for SMEs

by msecadm4921

The Business Crime Reduction Centre (BCRC) with the Humberside Police Authority are hosting a free seminar on Wednesday, September 19. The aim is to assist SMEs in Yorkshire and Humber region to avoid the risks posed by fraud. Speakers will discuss insider threats, cyber-crime attacks, identity theft and account take-over.

The event will run at the Humberside Police Authority in Hull, starting at 8.30am and finishing at 12.30pm. To register for this free event or to find out more information – visit www.bcrc-uk.org.

Organisers point to recent figures by the trade body CIFAS suggesting a sharp rise in fraud by employees. Looking on the positive side BCRC suggests that businesses, particularly larger corporates, are more able to detect and record employee fraud than in previous years.

David Ransom, Director of the Business Crime Reduction Centre, a partnership between the Yorkshire and Humber region’s police forces and charity People United Against Crime, which was established to advise small businesses on security threats including fraud said: “Fraud committed inside a business is a threat that must be taken more seriously than ever before. In a challenging environment of constantly developing technologies, economic hard times and a scarcity of employment, SMEs that do not take this threat seriously must recognise that the dangers they face in terms of their financial well-being, ability to operate legally and their reputation are significant.”

BCRC adds that it offers SMEs a ‘one-stop-shop’ for crime reduction advice. Through BCRC, trained Police Community Support Officers from the region’s four police forces can make physical and cyber security surveys of a business and report any vulnerabilities with recommendations including the introduction of staff policies and procedures, to reduce the threats.
