Fishing tackle protection

by Mark Rowe

An Angling Kit has been launched to protect fishing tackle from theft. In a link-up with LakeWatch UK, a crime prevention body to guard anglers from tackle theft, the new SelectaDNA kit has been introduced at fisheries across Kent and Essex including Cuton Lakes, Churchgate Lakes and Myth Pools.

All types of fishing tackle can be marked using the clear forensic marking solution which is the makers say virtually impossible to remove. The solution contains microdots, a DNA code and an ultra-violet marker. The tackle can then be registered on a secure online database which can be accessed by the police. If an item is stolen, any traces of the liquid will show up under a ultraviolet (UV) light and, because of the unique forensic code, the property can then be traced back to its rightful owner.

Nick Lee from LakeWatch UK said: “We are very excited to be introducing SelectaDNA to the angling community. Tackle theft has become a real problem, with some anglers even robbed at knifepoint in their bivvies. Anglers are easy targets as they often fish on their own, which makes them quite vulnerable. Their kit is all laid out on the riverbank ready for use, so the thief can easily see what they want to get hold of. Some of the equipment can be very expensive, with carbon fibre poles used by pole anglers costing up to £10,000.”

Nick added: “We have even heard of organised gangs following anglers home from a fishing trip and then stealing their equipment when it has been put away in a shed or garage.”

Deterrent warning signs displaying the SelectaDNA and LakeWatch UK logos are also available to plant on the riverbank or wherever tackle may be stored to deter potential thieves.
