A Northampton Town football fan was arrested for breach of a football banning order prior to England’s friendly international with Italy. Officers on duty for the Northampton’s League Cup match with Cardiff City on Tuesday night arrested a 26-year-old man at his Far Cotton home for failing to report to police prior to the international fixture.
Three other football banning order subjects in the county, who reported in late, after the deadline set for them to make themselves known, will be issued with warning letters.
They will be told that any further late reports will result in arrest and a potential prosecution.
Intelligence officer PC Nick Price said: “This arrest serves as a timely reminder to all those who are subject to football banning orders that our interest in them is not merely confined to major international football tournaments.
“They have an obligation to report to us and if they don’t do so, or don’t do so within the required time, there will be consequences.
“If an individual’s circumstances have changed then they need to let us know. It isn’t an option to ignore the reporting requirement.”
The man arrested, who was served a banning order following an incident during Northampton’s League Cup win over Liverpool two years ago, has been charged with the breach and is due to appear in court on 17 September.
