Crimestoppers annual report

by Mark Rowe

Working alongside regional police forces, the newly formed National Crime Agency (formally Serious Organised Crime Agency), and other government bodies, Crimestoppers provides a service between these agencies and the community, who may prefer to give information anonymously. Crimestoppers guarantees that it will maintain the anonymity of anyone who provides information, a promise that has never been broken in its 25 years of operation.

Campaigns continue to highlight major crime issues within society across the UK and overseas and drive the provision of critical information to the Crimestoppers’ phone line and website.

Operation Zygos launched in Cyprus to appeal for information on fugitives who had absconded following offences in the UK. Within days three criminals were brought back to face justice. ‘Scratch and sniff’ cards were distributed in key hotspots across the UK to educate the public on the signs (and smell) of commercial cannabis cultivation which has links to serious and organised crime. This resulted in a 28pc increase in information from the public in the first three months of the campaign.

The demand for Crimestoppers’ services also continues in supporting businesses to fight criminal activity. Crimestoppers’ partnership with the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) has seen a 50pc rise in information compared to the previous year.

Crimestoppers’ Chief Executive, Mark Hallas, says: “Crimestoppers’ commitment to fighting crime has never been stronger and we continue to be proactive and determined in exploring new and innovative ways to educate, empower and encourage the UK public to put their trust in Crimestoppers. Working with communities and government agencies, we believe Crimestoppers to be a truly effective crime-fighting charity that will continue to have a highly significant and successful impact on keeping communities safe.”
