Checkpoint screening guide

by Mark Rowe

PAS 127:2014 is a guide to checkpoint security screening of people and their belongings. For the document in full online visit the CPNI website – https://www.cpni.gov.uk/Documents/Publications/2014/2014-03-26-PAS127_mini.pdf

As CPNI (Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, www.cpni.gov.uk) says, screening people and their belongings at entry points can help reduce the likelihood of explosive devices, weapons, and other hazardous or prohibited items or materials being brought into buildings or onto sites.

Similarly, searching people as they exit can help reduce the risk of unauthorised removal of items or data. Screening measures may also serve as a deterrent to such theft.

The counter-terror advisers say that you should use the operational requirement methodology to develop an understanding of needs for measures for screening people and their belongings as part of a wider security regime. Note that belongings may include: outerwear such as coats and jackets; pocket contents; bags, rucksacks, umbrellas, tools-of-the-trade, and other carried items.

Besides the threats you may wish to mitigate against, consider also the anticipated demand for the screening process (including how this may vary, for example over a day or seasonally), and other constraints the organisation may face (such as limited space or suitably trained and experienced staff to man the checkpoint).

CPNI has been a contributor of technical content to BSi PAS 127:2014 Checkpoint Security Screening of People and their Belongings – Guide, which aims to provide guidance to security managers and contractors on the specification, design and delivery of checkpoint screening.
