Campus install

by Mark Rowe

At the new global headquarters of life sciences company Abcam on their Cambridge biomedical campus, access control is from the manufacturer SALTO Systems. The construction company Kier has appointed SALTO Inspired Business Partner GBE Fire & Security to install and commission the system, besides providing fire, gas suppression, disabled alarms, CCTV and data network systems for the £46m office and laboratory scheme.

The new site includes a three-storey laboratory building and a four-storey office building, connected by an atrium link, will combine Abcam’s facilities in Cambridge and will house the group’s UK innovation and manufacturing capabilities, laboratories, logistics, sales, marketing and corporate functions. It will also be the company’s European distribution hub.

GBE will be working with partners SALTO, Gent, Baldwin Boxall and Pelco, with GBE’s work commencing in October 2017 for a scheduled completion in August 2018.

Steve Rossiter, Key Accounts Manager SALTO Systems Ltd, says: “SALTO access control is in use at a number of bio-medical facilities around the world and we are very pleased that GBE has selected us for this prestigious new campus in Cambridge. Security measures in such places need to be robust and effective and SALTO will provide them with total control over who can access what, when and where at all times.”

GBE’s Business Development Manager Paul Walsh described it as another prestigious contract win. Among GBE’s other recent project wins are Godiva Place, a city centre site and part of Coventry University; the new £200m Jaguar Land Rover design and engineering centre, at Gaydon in Warwickshire; and 3 Wellington Place in Leeds.
