Broadmoor fence

by Mark Rowe

Binns Fencing has been appointed to provide a temporary secure perimeter as part of the enabling works for the re-development of Broadmoor Hospital.

West London Mental Health NHS Trust announced the £242m redevelopment of the high-security psychiatric hospital in Crowthorne after Government approval.

The project is to build ten new wards within the existing estate, alongside the six modern wards in the Paddock Centre, to create a modern, safe and secure setting for the clinical and therapeutic care.

The trust has appointed Keir as main contractor to work on the 150-year-old hospital, who in turn instructed Binns for the fencing. Binns has designed a temporary 5.2m high ‘prison-standard’ security fence with steel sheeting alongside Zaun, based on its temporary MultiFence security system developed for the London Olympics.

Binns MD Adam Binns said: ‘We have developed this temporary solution with no below-ground fixings to enable construction work proper to kick off as soon as possible in a secure and safe environment for patients, construction workers and the public alike – and for it to be removed once work is completed.’

The fence line includes Zaun’s HiSec security panels with the ‘358’ welded mesh configuration. Post clamps are mounted in receiving fixings that are actually cast into the concrete block, resulting the firms say in a robust fence line.
