Bicycle database revamped

by Mark Rowe

A search for a stolen bicycle happens every 2.4 minutes on the BikeRegister site. The cycle database has revamped its website to simplify registration to aid the recovery of lost and stolen bikes.

BikeRegister’s new web design is in response to customer feedback and allows users to register their bikes for free in a couple of minutes via a button on the updated homepage.

Users can then upgrade their registration to include a bike marking kit containing a unique ID code, which is a vital tool in the fight against bike theft.

Without a unique identifying number, police have no way of knowing who the bike belongs to. It is not enough to just list a frame number, as not all of them are unique and some ‘classic’ bikes don’t even have frame numbers.

The kit also contains a deterrent warning sticker, described as a simple but essential part of the marking process. Not only does it deter thieves, it alerts police to the fact that the bike is marked and registered.

BikeRegister is used by every UK police force to help them reunite the thousands of lost or stolen bikes they recover every year to their legal owners. It is the preferred bike marking product and registration system for the Metropolitan Police Service.

The website includes a free BikeChecker, so users can double check whether second-hand bikes they are planning to buy are not listed as stolen; and a Stolen Bike ‘heat map’ showing bike theft hotspot locations.

Andrew Knights, Managing Director of BikeRegister, which is owned and maintained by security company Selectamark, said: “As the market leader in the protection of UK bikes we take customer feedback very seriously and were keen to enhance the user experience of our site.

“Thanks to our excellent web development team supported by Kingston University, no other bike site offers anywhere near what we do in terms of user friendliness, speed and security of use. The objective of the new site is to have the quickest and easiest to use cycle registration scheme in the world. Based on the extensive testing we have done, we believe that is what we have achieved.”
