Airport upgrade

by Mark Rowe

Wick John O’Groats – the UK’s most northerly airport – has had an upgrade to its video and access security system.

Operated by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL), the airport is outside Wick in Caithness. The Glasgow-based installer Boston Networks worked with HIAL to review their existing systems across the airport estate. The installer say HIAL now has a more streamlined and effective IP security management system.

The overhaul saw the deployment of IP video and access control systems into key areas, including the arrival and departure halls, passport control and a number of remote buildings on the airport grounds. The integrated security management software provides operators with a single centralised real time view offering situation awareness to manage events. Boston Networks deployed a fibre optic network infrastructure and wireless backhaul to connect the main terminal to a number of remote buildings in the grounds.

Brian Hibbert, Technical Consultant, Boston Networks said: “We are delighted to work with Wick John O’Groats Airport to design and deliver a leading-edge IP security system to consolidate a range of security technologies into one simple interface. The new security solution will allow the airport to continue to provide the highest levels of security, whilst giving operators exceptional situational awareness to safeguard travellers, employees, buildings and assets.”
