Acoustic barriers

by Mark Rowe

Southern Salads, a family run business employing 230 staff, is a UK supplier of freshly prepared salads and fruit to the food and travel trades. Its main factory in Tonbridge, Kent, operates 24-hours and sees up to 35 HGV movements daily.

A recent redevelopment of a land across the busy A26 from the firm to residential apartment block has given rise to a number of complaints of noise and light pollution from the site. Hence the company specified 85 metres of Jakoustic Plus acoustic barrier, to help minimise the impact of the business on locals while presenting a natural timber screen. After discussions with the specialist Acoustic Team at the fencing firm Jacksons, a noise survey was commissioned and an absorptive barrier type recommended. The 4.5-metre-high, 85 metre run of Jakoustic Plus specified for the north and east boundaries of the site is supported by base-plated galvanised steel I-beam posts and designed to achieve a 16.4 dB reduction in noise from the site.

The solid nature of the Jakoustic Plus barrier plus its 4.5 metre height meant reduced light pollution from the site, overnight; allowing the local residents to enjoy their sleep.
