Case Studies

Access for datacentre

by Mark Rowe

A case study of fire suppression and access control for Interxion, a colocation datacentre service firm.

Interxion’s 4,700 square metre Austrian datacentre, VIE1, houses business critical data for hundreds of organisations. Interxion’s second datacentre, VIE2, will be built in multiple phases, and is expected to provide an extra 5,500 square metres of equipped space and 11 megawatts of available power when fully built by 2015.

Tyco Integrated Fire & Security (Tyco IFS)’ fire suppression and access control solution will enable Interxion to protect its VIE1 and VIE2 datacentres from a number of threats including electrical fires and data theft. The solution is highly-scalable and fully-integrated, consisting of a Gaseous Fire Suppression system and access control system.

The Gaseous Fire Suppression system has 100 containers (50 primaries and 50 reserves) and protects four server rooms. Each container uses LPG INERGEN Ilflow 300 bar with HD-Protector nozzle silencers, a FAST2030 control panel and stepper motor time delay. This solution will be expanded late 2014 as Interxion enlarges.

The access control systems, of card readers and biometric devices, will enable the user to control who enters the datacentres and surrounds; including the doors to the transformer stations, UPS rooms and air conditioning rooms. The initial fit is of 58 card readers and six fingerprint readers, connected to 12 control panels with 17 I/O cards and about 100 switches. Interxion plans to expand this system by late 2014 with an increase to 67 card readers and ten fingerprint readers connected to 13 control panels.

Martin Madlo Manager Operations at Interxion, said: “A security solution that combines access control, biometrics, and physical and logical mantraps, is a must for our business. The Tyco IFS solution allows us to implement all of these products, as well as any additional functionality required, without losing the manageability of the entire solution. This is particularly important given our expansion plan.”

Bernhard Pawlata, security and quality manager at Interxion, said: “Additionally, physical security is of the highest importance to our customers and in some instances we are required to tailor our overall security solution to meet the requirements of individual customers. Our Tyco IFS solution enables us to do this efficiently and easily. This, combined with solution reliability and the service support, meant that our decision to continue to partner with Tyco IFS is an easy one.”

And Rudolf Deussner, Sales Manager Security, Tyco Integrated Fire & Security, said: “Security is a crucial part of datacentre hosting and a major concern for organisations that require remote data access. The solution chosen by the Interxion team will ensure the datacentre is protected and highlights the dedication the company has to physically protecting its customers hosted environments.” Visit: www.tyco.eu.
