A bumper £3600 was raised during the first Security TWENTY event of 2018, ST18 Midlands, at Nottingham. As for some years now, the East Midlands Conference Centre on the campus of the University of Nottingham was the opening venue of the ST year. Diners at the Tuesday evening informal networking dinner gave cash to take part in the traditional heads and tails game (won by Alan Wilson of Gratte Brothers) and raffle, which also saw a bumper lot of prizes donated. Evolution topped up the original £2600 raised to a round £3000, and then Stuart Norris of Gratte offered two VIP tickets to The O2 for any event, bought in an auction compered by Roy Cooper by Steven King of Zenitel, one of the 85 companies and industry associations exhibiting at the venue the next day.
The basic ingredients of ST stayed the same, but with a few fresh features; the heads and tails game wasn’t decided on the toss of a coin, but was a ‘Play Your Cards Right’ higher-lower game of chance, with Roy Cooper in the Bruce Forsyth role. And after the dinner proper, a special guest arrived: Elvis, in Vegas-era white, who sang fans through his repertoire – by day Brian Wheeler, of Secom.
Ever since the ST series of events began in 2013, Professional Security has sought to make the chosen charity particular either to the region or otherwise special. Nottingham’s cash was raised for Rennie Grove Hospice Care in memory of Alan Walker of CDVI, who died of cancer last year.
Next stop for ST is ST18 Scotland, on May 1, at the same venue as in Glasgow last year, the Hilton on William Street in downtown Glasgow; but note that the Glasgow and Dublin events have swapped seasons from last year. ST18 North at Harrogate follows on July 5, then ST18 Ireland on September 5; and rounding off the year, ST18 London at Heathrow on November 7.

Each ST event offers free bacon butties for early arrivals (around 8.45am; doors open around 8.30am), mid-morning tea and biscuits; and a hot buffet lunch.
