How gross can you get?

by Mark Rowe

That’s it for another year, what do I mean? IFSEC, I mean, and yes I was there on the hottest day it’s been since 1977!

Did you get to go or did you decide to go to the beach? It didn’t disappoint as the usual faces were there treading the boards and visiting or manning over 600 stands with over 27,000 visitors, so the guys are reporting, and it certainly seemed very busy. So what’s new? If I am honest I didn’t see any new technology just many tweaks to existing. Drones played a very active part at the show with HIKVision building a special cage on their 444 square metre stand to demonstrate their one, lots of people gathered around to see it in action or was it because it created a fan of air like standing in front of a blower?

Cyber is of course very much being discussed now as it is the crime of the century with almost every manufacturer tackling that problem, you need to ask the question nowadays. I also visited a few companies for the first time notably Uniview, (and thank you for the special gifts) and Margos to name but a few. Axis Communications are breaking into PA systems, and have been for some time, but are introducing their easy plug and play system and are doing laser detectors, interesting! Hanwha and CSL had ice cream to give out, I know they have done it before but it was extremely hot this year. The show floor I mean, not the ice cream, that was a life-saver. Can I thank everyone for their hospitality as we did manage to visit a few of you, namely Xtralis (Honeywell), Assa, who had their parties on the yacht docked outside, DVS, HIKVision, Milestone Systems, Hanwha, NSI … I know, we are party animals.

IDIS presented us with an award for our partnership with them over the past 20 years. Thanks guys, that was very nice, we don’t normally get awards! But talking of awards, the patron of the Women In Security (WiS) awards, Una Riley, launched these on the NSI stand as they are the host of the awards this year. So get your nominations in. Yes, it was a very busy show and If I missed you – and I know I missed a few – I am really sorry. For me I could do with IFSEC running for three weeks not three days, but just imagine that bill?

Straight after that we rushed up to Harrogate for our own Security TWENTY 17 North event, where we managed to raise £2050 for the charity Sands. This was nominated by Alison Gallagher from iComply. Sadly Alison’s daughter suffered a still birth some eight years ago and called in the help of the charity to get them through that very difficult time. It was a sad coincidence that it would have been Alison’s grandson’s eighth birthday on the very same day we were raising the money. So a great charity and thank you not only to all those that put their hands in their pockets but also to all the companies that donated some fantastic prizes. I still get overwhelmed by your generosity. Harrogate saw a very packed show but sadly it rained in Harrogate and the temperatures were much lower, is that the north for you? More from the conference on page 18.

So to this month’s gossip. Salto have acquired the remainder shares in Clay, to become the sole owner of the company and have purchased a significant equity share in Poly-Control, the manufacturer of Danalock. Salto says that it’s executing its strategy in cloud technology and mobile access, as well as electronic locks for the residential market.

Pro-Vision welcome back Simon Davies as Sales Office Manager. Peter Ford, Managing Director of Pro-Vision said: “Simon’s appointment has enabled us to add even greater strength and depth to our sales team. He brings a wealth of experience with him and a sound knowledge of our industry. In particular Simon’s recent knowledge of IP and PA equipment and installations will be a major benefit to the sales team and our customers. We are delighted he decided to come back to the fold.”

DVS announce a new working partnership with Ivideon! That’s the provider of cloud surveillance systems for video streaming and cloud recording, and whose software is used by many of the biggest brands in security.

Oprema has appointed Michael O’Neill as Senior Marketing Manager. Michael is a CIM accredited marketer, with nine years’ experience spanning B2B, B2C and not for profit sectors. Michael began at Energy World and has since held roles at Inspire Sport, Peter O’Neill Services, Under Armour Performance Mouthwear and most recently Brickfab Ltd, where he held the position of Marketing and Product Development Manager for two and a half years.

Charity

GJD completed a 60 mile bike challenge from Manchester to Blackpool for The Christie Charity. Team GJD completed the Manchester to Blackpool ride on Sunday, July 9 to help raise money alongside 6,000 other cyclists. Greg Stuttle, Paul Tibbenham and Andrew Dale of GJD have raised £375. The money will be used to carry out more research and give more people the very best treatment and care – and save even more lives.

Finally, Marc Wesley at Pelco has a challenge for you. He wonders if any of you readers can do better for gross looking cameras? As he says, this old Photoscan must be about 25 years old and last serviced around then too. Can you find better, or should that be worse?!
