US bollard at Windsor Castle

by Mark Rowe

Windsor Castle, home of the monarch for 11 centuries, is being protected from terrorist vehicle attacks by bollards from a US firm.

The products in use are Californian product firm Delta Scientific’s DSC800 decorative bollards. The makers say that consultants can specify having ornamental steel trim attached directly to the bollard or select cast aluminium, iron or bronze to slip over the crash tube. If damaged, you can slide off the old sleeve and slip on a new one. The bollards are available in stainless steel, cast stone, ceramics and epoxy based stones. They can be fitted with an internal warning light for and engineered to suit high traffic volumes, the US company adds.

Greg Hamm, Delta Scientific vice president, sales and marketing, said: “These decorative bollards come in six different series – traditional, silhouette, sculptured, omni, lineas and architect. Protection levels all meet or exceed US Department of Defense and Department of State certifications. They hold the highest ratings ever given to bollard systems.” The makers add that their DSC800 is certified at K4, L2, and able to stop a 15,000 pound (6800 kg) vehicle at 30 mph (50 kph). As an example the Delta barricades at the United States consulate in Herat, Afghanistan, stopped a bomb-laden car and SUV from penetrating the entrances. The products are typically in use at embassies, barracks and naval ports, and government buildings such as the Department of State, in Washington DC. The 40-year-old firm also makes vehicle barricade systems, parking control equipment and guard booths. Visit www.deltascientific.com.
