Holography award

by Mark Rowe

Commemorative banknotes featuring a substrate-integrated diffractive optically variable device, (DOVD) have won the Best Applied Security Product award at the Excellence in Holography Awards 2017.

The CCL Secure produced Brunei Darussalam and Singapore $50 commemorative notes on Guardian polymer substrate, which feature the same design elements, and layout and a colour-shifting window featuring Latitude, depict Brunei Darussalam’s Istana Nurul Iman and Singapore’s Istana.

Latitude is a diffractive optically variable device (DOVD) technology that uses nanoparticles, and is not restricted to a conventional applied patch or stripe format. This provides a feature that can be validated in both reflection, with the holographic effect viewed by tilting the banknote in any direction, as well as in transmission.

Also commended in the same category was Morphotonix’s irremovable security device, developed for spirit safety closure applications. The firm uses proprietary technology to incorporate secure features on free-form 3D metallic master moulds used in plastic injection moulding, compression moulding, blow moulding, sealing, and laminating.

This year’s Excellence in Holography Awards drew a record number of entries as the industry marks 70 years since the invention of the hologram. More than 50 entries were considered for the awards organised by the trade body the International Hologram Manufacturers Association (IHMA).

Manoj Kochar, chair of the IHMA, pictured said: “It’s fitting that in our 70th anniversary year, the winners have demonstrated once again the highest standards of quality, creativity and technical ambition. There have been some tremendous entries and our best wishes and congratulations go out to all those whose achievements have been recognised at this event.”

The awards at the Holography Conference in Barcelona also saw Dr Paul Dunn win the Brian Monaghan Award for Business Innovation for his contribution to the industry.
