Gate Safe becomes charity

by Mark Rowe

Gate Safe, a safety initiative set up by Jacksons Fencing in September 2010, has become a charity. Madeleine Moon, pictured, MP for Bridgend (where Karolina Golabek was killed in an automated gate accident in 2010) and a supporter of the initiative, has agreed to act as a patron.

Gate Safe in August rolled out its IOSH (Institution Occupational Safety and Health) accredited Gate Safe Aware training course. To date 43 have undergone the training which targets installers, health and safety managers and anyone associated with the automated gate sector.

Gate Safe founder Richard Jackson says: “Our intention has always been for Gate Safe to operate as a generic safety campaign which has one simple objective, to prevent any further tragic deaths occurring as a result of an unsafe automated gate. We now have the training in place to build a data base of ‘Gate Safe Aware’ installers so the next phase of our campaign will be to direct all users – commercial and domestic – of powered gates, towards a professional who has a thorough understanding of the required safety protocol to ensure a compliant installation. We are delighted to have Madeleine acting as our patron. As a political figure that is personally aware of the terrible consequences of a failure to follow the acknowledged safety code of practice for automatic gates, we are confident that Madeleine – a seasoned and highly successful lobbyist – will be able to help us raise the profile of the charity and stimulate more widespread interest in this important safety issue.” Visit www.gate-safe.co.uk.
