Data destroyer

by Mark Rowe

New from VS Security Products is the Crunch 250. Described as a data destroyer, it crushes Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) and Solid State Drives (SSDs) in seconds, according to the makers. The product records all destruction information, giving hard copy evidence for audit purposes. Information that the log tracks include: processing company; model and serial number; media owner; operator or supervisor name and media information. VS Security Products reports over 30 years’ experience in designing and making erasure and destruction products. The product’s SSD adapter has specially profiled plates that crush the solid state media from top to bottom causing rippling which destroy memory chips.

The product is described as compact and suitable for the offices, with inbuilt safety features. As for operating it, destruction progress is shown on the LCD. The device destroys media including SATA, PATA, SCSI, Fibre Channel, notebook and laptop (all formats and types up to 1.66 inches in height). The destruction process takes just six seconds, the makers say. This means that the Crunch 250 can destroy in an hour 250 full height drives and up to 500 laptop hard drives.

David Tucker, Managing Director of Aldershot-based VS Security Products says: ‘We have been developing and manufacturing degaussers for over 30 years. Degaussers use magnetic technology to irretrievably jumble data held on magnetic media rendering them unreadable. Solid State Devices are not suitable for degaussing. That is why we have developed the Crunch 250 – to provide a destruction solution for Solid State Drives. For companies requiring the utmost security, the Crunch 250 provides a perfect accompaniment to a degausser that leaves the data housing unit intact. The Crunch 250 is packed full of features which we believe makes it the most attractive on the market today.’
