PoE switch

by Mark Rowe

A new Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch from Dahua Technology is designed for smooth IP transmission and to overcome problems of packet loss, the makers say.

The product’s PoE Setting feature allows a user to reserve some power manually through the web management interface, which can reserve power for those IP cameras which need extra power at some time, such as an IP camera with infra-red lighting, which requires more power during the night. The switch also shows the real-time power consumption.

A Green PoE feature allows user to set a schedule for PoE consumption, which allows PoE switch to provide power at certain times. For example, by setting “9:00 to 21:00” means the switch will provide power from 9am to 9pm and will cut the power supply outside that period and thus saves energy.

Regular PoE transmission distance is up to 100m, the company says. But the products PFS4218-16ET-190/240 and PFS4226-24ET-240/360 can provide it is claimed 250m PoE transmission through configuration in the web management interface. It will save much cost in SFP module and also optical fiber (including the cost in installation).

The power usage indicator in the front panel can show the PoE consumption of the PoE switch, which can help the user to determine whether it’s possible can connect more IP cameras:
50 per cent: means the total PoE consumption is below 50pc;
80pc: means the total PoE consumption is between 50 to 80pc; and
100pc: means the total PoE consumption is between 80 and 100pc.

Hi-PoE

Both PFS4218-16ET-190/240 and PFS4226-24ET-240/360 have 2 Hi-PoE ports, which can provide up to 60W for the firm’s Hi-PoE network dome camera.

Features

Video stream characteristics are different from an ordinary data stream. A sudden increase of a video stream brings high pressure to the data forwarding of the PoE switch. The flow control function of Dahua’s switch is enabled by default and the product’s large hardware buffer can ease the sudden data peak and smooth the video stream.

The switch is designed to work under extreme temperature ranges and despite lightning thanks to the lightning protection common mode 4KV and differential mode 2KV. Accelerated Life Testing (ALT) ensures reliability and long life time.

The makers add that the switch has passed a high video pressure test in a minimal 200 IP cameras test environment as a demonstration of product reliability.
