Premises protection

by Mark Rowe

Paul Cruddace, Sales and Marketing Director at glass and solar specialist Romag, shares his tips on protecting your business premises from external security threats.

While it isn’t pleasant to dwell on the negative aspects of life, as a business owner, it’s crucial that you ensure your business premises are properly protected. Even the smallest of offices contains thousands of pounds’ worth of equipment, while larger office buildings, shops, and warehouses can contain millions worth of value. Given that the average business premises are left completely unattended on evenings and weekends, it’s no wonder that they are often the target of thieves. However, there’s plenty you can do to protect your business starting with our pick of the most effective security solutions to protect your business premises from external threats.

Fences

The first line of defence for any business in a remote location should be a fence, especially if you have an on-site car park. While a fence is unlikely to prevent a determined thief from accessing your premises, their intentions will be clear to any passer-by, who will hopefully call the police. If you also install a gate on the vehicle entrance to the car park, thieves will struggle to steal any cars from your premises. If your office building doesn’t face out on to the car park, then cars could potentially be stolen from your carpark in the middle of the day, so a secure gate will help prevent this.

Lighting

A simple but effective security measure is to install security lighting around your premises. If your business is located in a densely populated area, a high level of lighting can deter any potential thieves from attempting to enter at night for fear of being noticed and identified.

CCTV

If your business property is often full of expensive equipment or you run a storefront that sells high-value items, then it can be wise to take your security to the next level with a CCTV system. When combined with a high level of lighting, a CCTV system will deter all but the most determined of burglars — the vast majority are likely to move on to an easier target.

Security glass

If you’re looking for an extra level of security, or if you run a shop that stocks high-value items such as jewellery, then security glass can be a great investment. Security glass features two or more layers of laminated glass that are processed in cutting-edge clean rooms and high-pressure autoclaves using different interlayers depending upon the level of attack you want to protect against. When the glass is attacked, the interlayers hold the glass together in their frame, resisting aggressive and sustained attempts to gain entry to the premises. This will not only protect your business from thieves at night but also ensure the safety of your staff during working hours. If you install these security solutions in your business premises, you’ll go a long way in securing your business against external threats, both during office hours and whenever the building is vacant.
