Integrated Systems

Info morning

Information destruction strategy has never been more important, say the organisers of an event on the subject on Februry 23, at the Law Society in London. Identity fraud currently costs the UK economy more than £1.2 billion each year, resulting in information disposal becoming one of the fastest growing sectors in the ID industry.

The invited speakers include David Palmer-Jones, CEO, SITA UK; and Daren Wood, of the British Security Industry Association, with a case study from Michael Abtar, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust.

Businesses risk significant losses, not only financial but loss of reputation and client confidence too, if they are seen to be lax in the manner in which they destroy sensitive information or products. The Data Protection Act (DPA) requires that Data Controllers provide sufficient guarantees of security measures when handling sensitive information and comply with the seventh principle of the DPA when destroying data. Breaches or non-compliance could result in fines of up to £500,000, a criminal record for the company directors and/or the Data Controller, or even the business being closed.

Do you recycle your confidential waste?

Ineffective waste management policy can result in data breaches that could affect consumer and client confidence in a company, as well as causing financial losses. As the business community becomes more environmentally aware, incorporating data protection and environmental policies could offer significant benefits to organisations, from financial savings, to improving brand position and client confidence.
