Welsh door checks

by Mark Rowe

In mid-Wales, Security Industry Authority investigators joined a Dyfed Powys Police led operation to check door supervisors across Ceredigion on Saturday night, July 27.

Some 44 premises were visited including: holiday parks, music festivals, and pubs and clubs. Of the 49 security operative checked, five individuals were found to be working without an SIA licence. Enquiries are on-going and will be taken forward by the police and the SIA. Warnings were also issued to ten door supervisors who had failed to notify the SIA of a change of their address, and for failing to display their SIA licence properly; both are breaches of the regulator’s licensing conditions.

SIA Head of Investigation Paul Cartlidge said: “We are disappointed by the number of door supervisors found working without an SIA licence. It is also disappointing to see that door supervisors are wearing photocopies of their licences; this is illegal and a practice that must stop. We will continue to work closely with Dyfed Powys Police to conduct more operations in the area.”

Dyfed Powys Police Inspector Rose Ann Lloyd said: “I would like this opportunity to remind licensees that it is a criminal offence to employ unlicensed door supervisors, to display a photocopied SIA licence, and that they must themselves also be licensed to employ door supervisors.” More ops are planned, she added.

Notes

By law, security operatives working under contract and all door supervisors must hold and display a valid SIA licence. A non-front line licence is required for those who manage, supervise and/or employ individuals who engage in licensable activity, as long as front line activity is not carried out; this includes directors and partners.
