Steam fair display

by Mark Rowe

August 2014 saw the largest steam fair in Europe, run over five days in Dorset. The event’s security manager Sean Arbon recruited fellow dog handlers, members of the National Training Inspectorate for Professional Dog Users (NTIPDU) to assist in site security, pictured.

The site covering over 600 acres saw an estimated 200,000 visitors. The handlers worked days or nights and were able to maintain the security around the site, overcoming adverse some weather (after the sun for the photo!) only seen once before in the 46 year history of the show.

Sean said after the event: “To help run and manage an event of this scale was sometimes overwhelming, but under the conditions we pulled through and it turned out to be a great event. The dog section worked very well and had some great new handlers who I hope will come back next year, thank you to all the handlers for their hard work.” And Sandra Timmis of the Welshpool-based NTIPDU said: “It was a pleasure to be able to help with such a large event, the handlers and dogs were a credit to the inspectorate.”
