Struggle for secure mobile access

by Mark Rowe

While most businesses understand the importance of including mobile in their security protocols, many are struggling to provide secure and user-friendly mobile access. That is according to a survey of IT security people, by Ilex International.

The vast majority (92 per cent) of the 254 IT security people surveyed at Infosecurity Europe conference in June said it was either very or fairly important to control access to business applications through mobile devices. Also, 84 per cent of respondents said their firms include mobile in their security policies in one way or another. However, it seems clear that most companies are struggling to provide mobile devices access to business information in a secure and user-friendly way, with only 25 per cent of firms extending their single sign-on (SSO) processes to include mobile.

Thierry Bettini, Sales Director at Ilex International, said that it’s simply not good enough to treat mobile devices as an exception or a barrier to your organisation’s security protocols. He said: “Businesses are the ones that benefit from employees bringing their own devices and being more connected to work through mobile devices, so they need to provide secure mobile access in a more user-friendly way. A single sign-on that includes mobile devices simplifies secure access for users and reduces the security risks for businesses. It means users won’t store usernames and passwords on devices and passwords won’t be shared across potentially insecure networks.”

Ilex International is an identity and access management product firm founded in 1989. They offer ‘Global SSO’, claimed to be the only security solution on the market featuring strong authentication, web access management, mobile access management, identity federation and eSSO functionalities through common architecture and administration. The firm is hosting a webinar on June 25 at 3pm GMT, covering important information and best practices to help businesses develop a security strategy which includes mobile SSO.
