Thermal night vision

by Mark Rowe

FLIR Systems has released its new PathFindIR II thermal night vision product. Using FLIR’s latest night-time video analytics algorithms, PathFindIR II provides automated detection and alerts of pedestrians and animals, so that drivers can see hazards sooner, and stay safer on the road at night. The product’s thermal night vision lets drivers see pedestrians, cyclists, animals, and other road hazards at night from up to four times farther away than with just a vehicle’s headlights.

Building on the original PathFindIR, and made with technology partner Autoliv, the PathFindIR II adds a nighttime pedestrian detection feature that can be configured to automatically display alarms that alert drivers when the system detects a person nearing or crossing the vehicle’s path.

Besides passenger vehicles, the product can be installed in a variety of cars, trucks, and industrial vehicles including:
•First Responders – Installed in police, fire, and other first responder vehicles gives operators the ability to see through smoke, find victims and suspects at night, and guide hoses onto fires.
•Mining – the product sees through dark and dust so haul trucks and shovel and scoop vehicles can operate without endangering people walking near mining vehicles.

Andrew Teich, CEO of FLIR says: “As the World’s Sixth Sense, FLIR can help make driving safer and more enjoyable no matter what you drive. With innovative technologies and improved image quality at an affordable price, PathFindIR II can give every driver expanded awareness of what’s going on around them.”

The product is featured on select models of Mercedes, Audi, and BMW cars. For datasheet visit – http://www.flir.com/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=64452.
